Allen, 32, happened upon bow tie making by chance. In 2009, CBC’s The Hour asked him to design shirts for celebrities at one Toronto International Film Festival event. Instead of gambling on shirt sizes, Allen went for the neck. Now he makes ties for both men and women, using unconventional materials, such as leather and snakeskin. He designs custom orders, as well. His ties, he says, are for anyone: “A young guy who could be 18, who wants something funky, to an elegant older man.”
